Why should you be careful when you are on Facebook, talking in a chatroom or getting involved in any kind of discussion board? Strange as it may seem to many of us, people communicating on the Internet seem to forget how permanent this kind of communication can be and how easily accessible it is to others who may not have their best interests in mind or who may take offense at trash talking, disparaging comments, or out and out lies about them. Because of the global reach of the Internet, damage awards may be higher in civil lawsuits. The fallout from the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot is ongoing and surely must serve as a reality check for people who think posting photos and video online is just simple harmless fun.
